Common FAQ about our Autism Assessment service in North Wales.

You may have some questions about how our Autism Assessment service works and what it entails. Here is a list of common questions and answers. Please contact us about anything you are unsure about.

Q – How long does it take to complete an autism or ADHD assessment?
A – An autism assessment will require several appointments sessions. It depends on the
complexity of the assessment, however a typical assessment may require possibly 4 – 6
appointments.

Q – How much does it cost to complete an autism assessment?
A – I would always suggest that a child or young person undergoes a screening
assessment prior to a full assessment. The cost of the screening assessment would
depend on the number of appointments required and the level of screaming needed.
However, screening assessments would typically be around a third of the cost of a full
assessment.

Q – Can I pay for an autism/ADHD assessment in instalments?
A – Yes, I am more than happy to be flexible about payments.

Q – Would you be able to feedback the outcome of the assessment to school?
A – Yes, with the parental/carer’s consent, I would be happy to meet with school, or any
educational setting, to discuss the outcome of the assessment. I always try to link up with
schools where possible, from the start of the assessment process, if appropriate to do so.

Q – Can you work with my young child who is very anxious and struggles with emotional
outbursts?
A – This depends a lot on the age and developmental level of a child. Typically, I would
look at completing a short assessment, by collecting information from you prior to any
intervention/therapy, in order to get a better understanding as to why these difficulties
may be occurring. If your child is of primary school age, it may be much better to support
you as parents/carers to help your child, by trying out some evidence-based strategies at
home. I may be able to support parents/carers with this intervention.

Q – Can I complete an autism or ADHD assessment online with you?
A – Covid permitting, I would always complete a combination of face-to-face clinic
appointments and virtual sessions, if appropriate to do so. In order to get a full
understanding of a child or young person’s strengths and difficulties, I find that it is
extremely helpful to see families face-to-face. I would need to consider the age of the
child or young person and any additional factors such as communication difficulties,
learning difficulties or other additional developmental factors. This would help me to plan
out the assessment. I would always want to see young children in clinic for face-to-face
appointments as part of their assessment.

Q – Can an autism or ADHD assessment be completed through the medium of Welsh?
A – Yes, all assessments can be completed via the child or young person’s first language,
if appropriate to do so.

Q – How will I know what the end result of the autism assessment might be?
A – I would always keep parents/carers informed by having a feedback session mid-way
through the process or earlier if needed.

Q – Can you help to support us after the assessment, if we need help with emotional
outbursts or day-to-day difficulties?
A – Yes, depending on the outcome of the assessment, this could also be considered. We
would need to establish what type of support (if any) is required and match this with the
best person to support you/your child or young person.

Q – Can ADHD assessments be completed at the same time as an autism assessment?
A – Yes, when completing autism assessments, I always consider ADHD and both
assessments can be completed during the same period, with no extra fee. The
assessment process would require additional appointments.

Q – Can I sit in with my child during an autism assessment?
A – Typically, with all autism assessments for younger children or children with additional
needs, I would always welcome parents/carers to be present during the assessment
process.
